Magna Carta

    U.S. #1265 commemorates the 750th anniversary of the Magna Carta, which is the basis of English and American common law. Magna Carta Approved by England’s King John in 1215, the Magna Carta was one of the first steps toward a constitutional government in England. This document became the basis for American common law, and has been used as a model of government for nations around the world. Virginia native and American patriot Thomas Jefferson was influenced by the Magna Carta when he wrote the Declaration of Independence.
