#162 – 1873 12c Clay, blackish violet

  • Description
    Known as the “Great Compromiser,” Henry Clay left his mark on history. A wise leader and statesman, his compromise of 1850 helped delay the Civil War for 11 years. The Continental Bank Note Company added secret marks to this 12¢ Clay Bank Note stamp. The balls in the numeral “2” are crescent, rather than round, making a much more ornate script
