Now you can get a piece of US Civil War history that has survived over 150 years to make it into your collection. These covers carried letters across enemy lines under a Flag of Truce. For a letter to be carried in this way, it had to be put in an unsealed envelope with postage and delivery address included as usual, and then this inner cover was placed into another cover for transition through an exchange point between the North and South. At these points, the outer cover was destroyed and the inner cover and correspondence was examined before the inner cover was sealed and hand-stamped "inspected" by officials. The most common exchange points were City Point, Virginia, for letters travelling from North to South, and Fortress Monroe, Virginia, for letters travelling from South to North. Each of the covers available in this offer features a 3¢ Washington Rose (Scott #65) stamp. One cover has a Camp Chase censor's marking to Virginia and the other has an oval examiner's backstamp and was headed to Johnson's Island. As can be expected with covers this old that have gone through the postal system (and during a war, no less), they show some wear, but are overall in fine to very fine condition.
