In 1783, General George Washington issued a proclamation of peace from his headquarters at the Hasbrouck House in Newburgh, New York. This stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary of that proclamation which officially marked the end of hostilities of the Revolutionary War. Peace of 1783 With the victory at the Battle of Yorktown (October 19, 1781), the Americans had essentially won the Revolutionary War. However, it took two years of negotiations, as well as some occasional fighting, to officially secure peace. On September 3, 1783, the Americans and British signed a treaty.
