Coast and Geodetic Survey

  • Description
U.S. #1088 was issued on the 150th anniversary of the Coast and Geodetic Survey, which aids sailors and engineers by making contour maps. In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson signed a bill for the “Survey of the Coast.” The project took decades – and became even bigger as the young United States expanded rapidly to the Pacific Ocean. In 1871, a law was passed to require the survey to extend to the interior of the country, as well. The project is ongoing, as it has emerged into a federal agency. It was again renamed in 1970 as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA).
