New Mexico Statehood

  • Description
U.S. #1191 commemorates the 50th anniversary of New Mexico statehood. New Mexico was admitted as the 47th U.S. state on January 6, 1912. The region had been gained during the Mexican-American War in 1848 and was made an official U.S. territory in 1850. The stamp pictures “Shiprock,” a rock formation rising over 1,500 feet above the surrounding area. It’s located in the northwest part of the state and has great religious significance for the Navajo people. While climbing Shiprock is illegal, there are still attempts made by ambitious rock climbers.
