2022 5c Butterfy Garden Flower - Scabiosas

  • Description
Pincushion flowers (Scabiosa) are showy blooms that are very good at attracting pollinators – especially butterflies. Plus they add beauty to any garden. Scabiosa is part of the same plant family as honeysuckle and Weigela. It earned its nickname "pincushion flower" from the tall stamens that come from the center of the round flowers, resembling pins in a pincushion. A single plant produces anywhere from 20 to 50 blossoms, with one flower coming from each stem. Depending on the part of the country you live in, Scabiosa can be an annual or perennial. They come back every year (perennial) in warmer regions (USDA Hardiness Zones 5-7), but must be replanted each year (annual) in cooler climates. However, this depends on the particular variety of Scabiosa, as some, like the "Fama White," are hardier than others. Butterflies and other pollinators are some of the most important parts of a healthy garden. So it only makes sense to plant lots of flowers that attract them. Scabiosa are one of the best choices as they come in many bright colors and attract both bees and butterflies alike. Your friends and family are sure to love these beautiful flowers, too!
